With the Series 6 Apple Watch, Apple sticks to what it does best: a solid, reliable gadget with a beautiful interface and excellent performance. The value for money is still very good and we can recommend this device to everyone who doesn’t need more than the basic functionality of an activity and sleep tracker and notification sender and person-to-person messenger.
The Apple Watch Series 6 is available on the online and in its retail stores. The price of the smartwatch depends on your choice of case material, strap, size and type of integrated mobile connection. For this review, we tested a larger version with LTE support. A variant with GPS only is also available.
Apple Watch Series 6 review: Features and Specifications
The Series 6 Apple Watch comes with a lithium-polymer battery. According to Apple, it has a day of standby time and 18 hours during intensive use (time only). A charging box with an induction charger is included in the package. The box is used to charge the smartwatch and a USB cable with an integrated magnetic connector. If you have an iPhone, you can also use Apple’s standard wireless charging system on a Qi base.
Apple Watch Series 6 review: Design and Processing
The Apple Watch Series 6 looks very similar to the predecessor model. A new colour variant with a pink case and golden elements is available. There’s also a new ceramic model with a white case, which can be ordered in combination with an also white sports band.
The device is still complemented by an aluminium case in black or silver. On the back are three horizontally arranged stickers with the Apple logo, the name of the series and serial number. The display is protected by scratch-resistant sapphire glass.
The integrated mobile connection is slightly thinner than the first Apple Watch. The Series 1 was also only waterproof up to 50 meters, whereas the Series 6 has an IP68 rating and can thus be used for swimming.
After one year of use, the aluminium case of our test device has clearly deepened – however, this is probably not the case with every Series 6 watch. We, therefore, assume that not all smartwatches are equally sensitive to scratching.
Apple Watch Series 6 review: Display
The Apple Watch Series 6 comes with one of two different OLED displays . The smaller 1.7-inch display (38.6mm) has a resolution of 272 x 340 pixels and thus a pixel density of 312 PPI. The larger 2.0-inch display (45.5mm) has a resolution of 368 x 448 pixels and thus a pixel density of 326 PPI .
Both versions have a pixel format of 1,000 x 1,000 pixels and a contrast of 1,000:1. The brightness is 500cd/m² for the smaller species and 625cd/m² for the larger species. This results in excellent readability even in direct sunlight.
The OLED display has an edge-to-edge glass surface without any gaps or edges . Apple calls its technology “Super Retina”. The OLED colors are vibrant and saturated, but there are also occasional color shifts in very dark environments.
Apple Watch Series 6 review: Hardware and Performance
Both generations of Apple Watches have basically the same hardware inside . A powerful dual-core S4 processor manufactured by Apple rests in almost every model. It is supported by an accelerometer, a heart rate sensor and an ambient light sensor. The built-in memory also has 768 MB of RAM.
